A few times each season we plan to use a Herb Chambers sponsored van to explore walks that are somewhat further afield. In order to allow time for the walking portion these will not be distant, but they will be varied. We plan to meet near a T station, board the van, drive to our destination, have a walk and return to the city, where we will have a nearby restaurant in mind for our usual lunch.

The Boston Nature Center is a haven within the city limits in the Savin Hill neighborhood near the Franklin Park zoo. On our short-ish walk we will be accompanied by the Director of the Center, Erin Kelly, who will point out legacy trees and the history surronding the trees. Erin will include fascinating notes on the Center’s history and pre-history as well as, naturally, the flora and fauna of the place. We’re very lucky to have her as our guide. If time permits, more hardy walkers can extend the trail loop to a boardwalk overlooking a marsh where the birdsong is enchanting.

Being a nature center, only a portion of our walk route is paved. Though the paths are groomed, you will be walking on graveled and mulched surfaces, however our trail is designed to be an “all persons trail” accessible to almost all. One short small hill.

Bus will be departing at 10:30 a.m.The pick up spot for this trip at the corner of Summer and Dorchester Ave. across from the rear of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Registration is required for BHV members and their guests. Van capacity is limited.
Free. Weather permitting. Bring walking sticks and canes with you for confidence in
navigating the paths with ease.

Rain Date: In the unlikely event of bad weather we will postpone this van walk one
week to May 29 in order not to miss out on the outside experience.
