Cambridge Neighbors walks leader Susan Murray has devised a great walk for us,
nearby but unexplored by many BHV’rs, I’ll bet. We’ll walk from Union Square slowly up
the hill to the Prospect Hill Tower and Park, a 1903 memorial to this spot which played a
significant role in the early months of the Revolutionary War and served as an
encampment during the Civil War. Legend has it that it was here that George
Washington first raised the Grand Union Flag, the first ‘American’ flag, with its 13 stripes
and a Union Jack.

Then we’ll explore some of the neighborhood taking in both grand and more modest
homes built on Prospect Hill during the 1850s through the 1890s. Our pay-your-own
lunch will be at Machu Picchu in Union Square. About 1.5-2 miles walking.
Meet at 10:30 a.m. in Union Square at the little cobblestoned park with benches and
tables in front of the Independent and Bronwyn restaurants. Public transportation is by
the Green Line’s D branch to the Union Square stop. The T says to allow 20
minutes from Park St. to Union Sq.
If taking the Green Line, when you disembark, follow the “Exit to Prospect Street”
signs, staying on the sidewalk until you reach the intersection with Dunkin’, a brick
building with signs for MAPS and SCATV, and Ricky’s Flower Market on the other
corners. Our meeting spot is next to the brick building so you need to cross both
streets.
Registration is required for BHV members and their guests. Free. Weather permitting. Some of this route is sunny so bring water and sun protection.
